What does a landscape architect do?

In a nutshell, Landscape Architects analyze, plan, and design the development of outdoor spaces.

Projects range from small residential lawns and gardens to expansive public outdoor spaces and streetscapes. Designs may include terraces, walls, gardens, plantings, pools, paths or trails, patios, plazas, outdoor shelters, event areas, plans for stormwater management and more.

Take a look at some of George’s past projects for examples.

What is the difference between a landscaper and a landscape architect?

Landscape Architects are trained to design landscapes, not to build them. In order to be licensed, they are required to retain a broad library of knowledge which includes design theory, horticulture, agrology, history, site and project planning, and more.

Landscapers are not required to have any education on those topics, and often only have on-the-job training and experience. They perform the hard labor required to implement the design created by the Landscape Architect. Landscapers are on the ground, planting shrubs and trees, installing sprinkler systems, and digging holes, while the Landscape Architect oversees the process and helps ensure that the finished product meets the client’s expectations.

I already know what I want my PROJECT to look like. Why should I consult with a Landscape Architect?

There are many advantages to working with a professional designer.

  • A good designer stays on top of design trends, new technology, and can provide aesthetic and practical guidance on issues that will affect your outdoor space for many years to come.

  • A Landscape Architect integrates factors into the design plan that may not have occurred to someone else. Climate, ecological sustainability, soil conditions, drainage, slope, and desired level of maintenance are all factored in, as well as the client’s personal preferences.

  • A professional knows which plants, shrubs, grasses, trees, and flowers will thrive in your geographical region, and perhaps more importantly, which will not.

  • A professional knows which building materials are best for outdoor hardscape such as patios, walkways, gazebos, walls, pools, and fountains. They can refer you to distributors who sell quality materials and provide the best value for their prices, saving you hours of research and the headache of having to re-do components that were unable to withstand outdoor conditions.

Simply put, GEO WORK + DESIGN will help you set up a beautiful landscape that won’t require a lot of expensive maintenance down the road.

I’m still not sure whether my project can benefit from the help of a Landscape Architect. How can I learn more?
